Italian students
Teachers and students explored similarities and differences. Students loved learning about how climate change affects this area of the continent by means of educational visits made to places of interest. Although there are many differences in all schools, one thing remains the same across the globe: to do what it takes to make a difference in students' and teachers' lives. International learning and knowledge propels students towards acceptance and understanding of an array of different cultural and community perspectives. Language acquisition is achieved through practical immersion. Self-development and awareness leading to enhanced self-confidence and self-esteem. This is often the most noticeable change in returned exchange students. They also had the opportunity to make new connections — with their host family, friends at school and teachers — with whom they are likely to remain in contact for years to come. They experienced learning in a different education system, which exposed them to a different style of teaching and learning to what they are used to. Although the basis of student exchange is to provide an educational experience, participants had the opportunity to see the sights of their exchange country during their stay. They became more independent and learnt a variety of life skills. Professionally, the best aspect is for teachers that they get to put themselves outside their regular practice, which means they need to be a bit more confident, and go out of their way to meet people and to question.
At the end of the two years of project, students and teachers learnt how to establish an intercultural communication by means of environmental issues that affect all of us. They shared cultural values by sharing their traditions. They have overcome prejudices and stereotypes by valorising differences.
