Program of the Activity

Implementation of the Activity

This was the fifth face to face meeting of the partners. For every partner schools there were on average 4 students and 2 teachers. For the host school, there were 7 teachers and approx. 20 students.

Every partner school had to prepare, like before, a presentation about their country, but this time the topic was "How to be an ECO-school". The goal was to see what is similar and what is different in the partner countries from this point of view.

The programme of the activities was the following:

DAY 1: Monday, 13th February

- Welcoming Ceremony – traditional Portuguese dance

- Visit of the school and an exhibition of object made from recyclable materials. Presentations about "Being an ECO-school"

- Outdoor learning – groups of Ss received a chemistry kit and utensils to collect water from a river near the school and analyse its quality: ph, temperature, colour, smell, clarity, macro-organisms that inhabit it etc.

The last part of the activities on the first day was an eye-opener for the participants as they could see how water has different features depending on its position and how important it is to ensure that the quality of water is fit for consumption.

Implementation of the Activity

DAY 2: Tuesday, 14th February

- Visit to a lighthouse in Leça da Palmeira – a unique experience for all the participants who climbed over 200 steps to get to the top. They could observe the Atlantic Ocean and they were told about the importance of lighthouses and how they function. More explanations were provided in the museum of the lighthouse.

- Workshop with an expert in the Serralves Natural Park, where Ss were explained about the kinds of trees that are found in the park (especially cork), their age and how they are monitored by the experts. Ss worked in mixed international groups to make posters with ideas about how they, personally, can help the planet.

DAY 3: Wednesday, 15th February

- Educational visit to the city of Porto where we admired some of its landmarks: São Bento Train Station, the Clerigos Tower, the City Hall, the Cathedral, Ribeira (with its breathtaking sunset), and the Luiz I Bridge that also took us to Vila Nova de Gaia, where we found street art made of recyclable materials and a sardine can factory.

DAY 4: Thursday, 16th February

- Photo exhibition at the host school with images taken by each partner country during the mobility and messages about this experience.

- Coordinators' meeting – various aspects of project implementation were discussed

- Farewell dinner with a concert given by the Portuguese teachers – Certificates Ceremony

Implementation of the Activity

All the participating schools, including the host one, were during the school year, so the students were exempted from school, on condition that they get their lessons and homework from the other classmates. The teachers were replaced by colleagues during the mobility.

It was a mobility rich in diverse activities, as was described above.

- Given that the international group was always together fostered bonding between the students, who could interact with their peers from the partner countries, to talk about their educational systems, about their interests and preferences, to see what is similar and what is different. Student interaction was, as usual, encouraged on a large scale, despite the occasional difference in age between the participants. They improved their communication skills and their level of English, became more confident and less shy. They learnt how to be part of a large group and how each member's contribution is essential for the greater good.

- The ecological tasks, particularly the visit to the river near the school and to the Serralves National Park, raised awareness among the participants about the importance of preserving nature and knowing how to avoid polluting it in order to reduce the harm done to the vegetation and the local animals' habitat.

- The cultural activities contributed to becoming more open-minded and tolerant of the others, to find similarities amongst themselves and to appreciate what is different.

Implementation of the Activity

- The educational visits gave the participants the opportunity to see wonderful unique places, specific to the area, tightly connected to the history of the host country.

- The students took part in many cultural activities strongly connected to this theme, which made them realise how easy it is for the power of nature to affect a country's buildings and monuments, as well as protected areas, and how important it is for humans to be actively involved in the conservation process and to take action to preserve what is typical and unique for their country and cultural identity.
